well-rounded, engaging and scholarly overview

This book is sprinkled with interesting, little-known facts about the LDS church as it transitioned from the first generation of leadership in the nineteenth century into the next hundred years that made up the twentieth century. By integrating the larger canvas of American socio-economic development as a backdrop, the author overlays and then highlights LDS history with pithy stories, pictures and sidebars of the actions and reactions of church leadership to the ever changing political landscape. Reading it helps clarify the development of various Mormon doctrines including stances on polygamy, tithing, welfare and missionary work. The book is well balanced and matter-of-fact in its tone. Those unfortunate enough to be predisposed to despise Mormons and their theology will find the author an apologist because his work lacks the bitter diatribes they revel in. Certain doctrinaire Mormons (convinced beyond all hope or reason that the church is a stainless work of complete perfection) may wince at the evidence that any lack of unity ever existed in the high councils of the church. But all this does is serve to underscore the fact that this tome is a well-rounded, engaging and scholarly overview of last 100-years of LDS history. It is a hopeful, praiseworthy effort, well worth reading by members as well as those interested in knowing more about LDS history.
