An important work but a slow read

I will say from the outset that this book is an academic book and is not meant as a quick, or a pleasure read, though it is only 192 pages long. I've read numerous academic books and this is like so many of them: easy to put down and yet intellectually enlightening. The author spends much of his ink in theoretical realms, applying modern sociological systems to the idea of culture regions in the pre-progressive era of Mormonism. For the author late 19th/early 20th century Mormonism is its own cultural region, very distinct and yet intricately entwined with the non-Mormon cultural region. The idea of region permeates the book. The books deals with polygamy, feminism, economics, LDS social norms, and much more as an outgrowth from previous systems and their evolutionary changes. This book will appeal to the academic student of Mormon studies but not to the lay reader of Mormon history. Highly recommended for those looking for quality, non-popular histories of the evolutionary thought of controversial topics within Mormonism.
