Just okay...

The content is decent, but the writing isn't easy to wade through...it's the kind of book you will read and reread to really feel like you "get" it.

Not for serious scholars

I bought this book on impulse and was startled to discover its many sweeping and unfounded generalizations. For example, the author states that all the women of Israel were Holy and all the families were happy. He does not qualify this statement in any way. We know from the New Testament and other sources that divorce and adultery were aspects of social life in first century Palestine, but the author prefers to ignore this.
The book is essentially a rewriting of history from a Christian perspective. Only after purchasing the book did I discover that author died in 1889. Those interested in 19th century Christian literature may find it interesting, but as a resource for scholars of ancient Judaism, it is of little value.
